Shamrock Farms celebrates June Dairy month by helping the “greater herd”

Consumer purchases can earn milk donations for St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance

PHOENIX (June 1, 2010)—Shamrock Farms, Arizona’s hometown dairy, is celebrating June Dairy Month by helping the greater herd with a virtual “milk” drive to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

June 1 – 30, 2010, dairy purchases do more because when Arizona families enter the UPC code from their Shamrock Farms milk, cottage cheese or sour cream online at www.shamrockfarms.net through the month of June, Shamrock Farms will make a donation to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance of one 8-oz. serving of milk, up to 10,000 servings of milk (limit two UPC submissions per consumer per product category). That’s one ice-cold serving of farm-fresh milk for every cow at our Arizona farm!

Also, every time a person enters their UPC code and earns a serving of milk for St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance through the month of June, they will be entered to win a one-year supply of Shamrock Farms dairy – valued at $250.

“Giving back to the community is an important part of who we are at Shamrock Farms, and we’re happy to celebrate June Dairy Month by helping those in need obtain the critical nutrients found in milk,” said Sandy Kelly, director of marketing for Shamrock Farms.

Arizona is facing an unprecedented hunger crisis. So much so, that if food bank donations stopped, the warehouses would be empty in just 40 days.

In just the last two years, St. Mary’s Food Bank has nearly doubled the amount of food distributed into the community, with nearly 77 million pounds donated in the 2009 calendar year. Here are the startling facts:

  •  More than 40 percent of the households receiving emergency food assistance have at least one person who is working.
  •  More than 50 percent of those receiving emergency food assistance report having to choose between buying food and paying rent or a mortgage.
  •  Nearly half receiving assistance are children.

“Milk is an incredibly important part of a healthy diet, and we’re thankful to Shamrock Farms for their continued support and especially the opportunity to ensure this nutrient-packed beverage is available to the many people we serve,” said Terry Shannon, President and CEO for St. Mary’s Food Bank.

The June Dairy Month milk donation will be in addition to Shamrock Farms regular monthly donation to local food banks of more than 80,000 pounds of food.

No purchase is necessary to enter. See official rules beginning June 1st by clicking here for details, including how to enter without purchase.
